| |1989084|Middleton|06/ 09/ 21 07:04|NEA - Water pollution - Hartlepool ; Caller reporting water pollution in Hartlepool Headland docks (Victoria Harbour) ; The water looks //rusty// and ginger ; Brown sandy dust on the surface of the water ; Caller can see at least 100 yards is effected by this all around the quay edge ; Pollution is noticeable from Bond Street ; No odour noticed; Caller informs that thousands of tons of scrap metal is stored 8 yards from the water ; Caller thinks the recent rain onto the scrap metal has caused the pollution ; No wildlife impact seen ; Photos and video available from caller|The pollution / staining was from a release of rust dust coming from the nearby scrapyard. Our waste Regulatory Officers visited the scrapyard and agreed with the operator what mitigating action needs to happen to prevent similar releases in future. The quay is used for bulk loading of waste materials which can include scrap and tyre crumb on an ad hoc basis however waste material is not stored permanently in this area. When the bund is in use the drainage holes are blocked off, so water is contained within the bund. On this occasion the staining observed was not deemed to be causing a significant risk of harm to the environment.
